Greg Wilson – a journey in time

Let’s go back in time. A time from which we don’t have memories because probably weren’t even a thought in our parents lives. 1975. This is the moment Greg Wilson started mixing. At Iarmaroc we will witness the act of a pioneer on the British scene. He will produce chaos in everything we thought we knew about DJing. How does he do it? With 2 Revox B77 magnetophones. When did you last time see or touch one?

Greg’s career revolves around the notion of “the first”. He is the first DJ who mixed live at the British television in 1983. He realized the first series of radio mixes in UK, for the Piccadilly 261 radio station in Manchester in 1982. He was the first DJ hired for a weekly residency in the legendary club Hancienda in 1983. Before that he had great residencies at Wigan Pier and Legend in Manchester, two clubs with a decisive influence on the musical trend in England in the 80’s. Greg brought an innovation to the post-disco electronic sound that came from New York and named it “Electro-funk”. In 1984 he was co-producer for most of the pieces on the compilation “UK Electro” launched by the label Street Sound. Ten years later he selected the pieces for the compilation “Classic Electro Mastercuts”.

Greg gave up DJing in 1983, but returned 20 years later. He launched the site www.electrofunkroots.co.uk in 2003, a very well documented biography of a crucial era in the evolution of the dance music culture. The comeback materialized trough excellent gigs at famous clubs and parties: Electric Chair, Horse Meat Disco, Fabric, Back To Basics, Ministry Of Sound, Asylum, Melting Pot and Sub Club. The label Tirk Records launches in 2005 the compilation „Credit to the Edit”, a trip trough Greg’s entire career. He recovered the entire pause in his career, becoming in 2008 one of the favorite figures in many of UK’s and Europe’s music festivals, having gigs everywhere in the world. The same year, he mixes on the Space Ibiza terrace for the first time, at the We Love Sundays party. As if it wasn’t enough, in 2009 he „does”an Essential Mix at BBC Radio 1, plus a new volume of the compilation „Credit to the Edit”.

Let’s come back nowadays and dance challenged by the legend of Greg Wilson and his megaphones, at the funk scene at Iarmaroc. Cheers mates!
